Wootton Cricket Club had its beginnings in the public bar of the Cedars Pub in the early eighties. A few knockabout games were played and it was decided to form Wootton Cricket Club in 1982. The club played a dozen games or so in that first season.
From the outset, the club has always tried to stay within the village for its players. 95% of the club members either live, have lived, or work in the village. The players range in age from 10 to 70 and we have a growing number of lady players. Our members include engineers, builders, teachers, shop workers, managers, self employed, unemployed, IT workers, dustmen, painters, school kids and retired.
The club plays friendly cricket in both senses. We have never felt the urge to play league cricket although many members also play, or have played, for league clubs. We have hosted plenty of touring sides over the years, some of whom have been coming to the island and to us for over 15 years. We think the warm welcome we give them and the cold beer from the Cedars may have a lot to do with that.
We have raised money for local charities over the years by playing 'special' games and imposing fines for misdemeanours (dropped catches, ducks, etc.) - the fines are small, but the total raised each season is surprisingly high!
We continue to support the local PHAB club (Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied). Over the past few years we have run very successful quiz nights and horse racing nights at both the Community Centre and the Cedars (keep an eye on the "News" section for upcoming events).
Run by a qualified coach, we hold practice nights during the Summer on Mondays, mainly for our junior members although senior players also regularly attend - we often need more coaching than the 'nippers'.
The club plays around 50 matches each summer season, and a further 16 or so matches in the Indoor League every Winter. We embark on very successful tours to the West Country every August (the first was in 2003, see the "Tours" section of the web site), and we will be doing the same again this year!
We have a dedicated and energetic Club committee who aim to help the club to grow, while making sure we continue enjoying ourselves for many years to come!
